Bone is probably the most frequently transplanted tissue in the body. It can be used to treat or repair defects resulting from atrophy, injury, congenital malformations or neoplasms. Reconstruction of bone defects has long been a challenge for oral and maxillofacial surgeons, but knowledge of bone repair and graft behaviour has allowed the design of protocols for harvesting, preserving and eventually inserting the grafts.
